If you've started planning for your destination wedding in Europe, then we're talking to you. Europe will begin implementing a new requirement for all US citizens, set to begin in 2024 [an exact date has not been confirmed yet, so please keep checking here.]

US passport holders will require authorizatio to enter 30 European countries via the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). Why, you ask? ETIAS is quite similar to existing travel rrequirementsthe US has implemented [ESTA - Electronic System for Travel Authorization], reflecting increased fear of terrorism in the U.S., Europe and around the world.

So, here's what you should know…

1. WHERE DO I APPLY AND HOW MUCH WILL IT COST ME?

The application process has not opened yet, but when it does, the European Union notes, all necessary forms can be filled out via a web portal or mobile phone application.

You will need to provide personal information such as your date of birth, parents' names and details about your current occupation and previous criminal convictions. You will also be required to share a passport not set to expire in less than three months.

Your cost will be approximately 7 euros.

2. WHEN SHOULD I APPLY?

We recommend you apply as soon as you know you are planning a trip to Europe — at minimum a month out to your travel date. While most applications are processed within minutes, ETIAS notes the process could take between 4 to 14 days if additional information is required and up to 30 days if an interview is requested.

ETIAS approval will stay valid for three years or until the passport you used in your application expires, whichever comes first. Having an ETIAS approval grants you stay in the European countries on the list for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. You can leave and come back, but you can't stay in the confines of the countries on the list for 91 days or more non-stop.

3. WHAT HAPPENS IF I DONT’T APPLY AND TRAVEL TO EUROPE?

Let's not try this, as your ETIAS will be linked to your passport and you will be turned away.

4. HOW WILL THIS AFFECT MY WEDDING?

As long as you have applied and been approved, you will be fine. If you're wedding is in 2024 and ETIAS has not been implemented, travel as usual.

5. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED TO KNOW OR SHOULD I BE DOING?

All we can recommend is you stay informed through the ETIAS website.

Additionally, if you are on the fence about hiring a wedding planner, you may want to reconsider. Part of our job planning weddings abroad is staying abreast of new travel requirements, educating our couples and helping them navigate through the process for a seamless, enjoyable experience.
